[page 17] HARRY WARNER 423 SUMMIT AVE. HAGENS- TOWN, MARYLAND 21740 FULL AGREEMENT ON THE OPINION THAT FANS SHOULDN'T STOP TRYING TO PUT MUSIC TO TOLKIEN POETRY, JUST BECAUSE THE POET IS COLLABORATING WITH SOMEONE IN MUSICAL SETTINGS. AFTER ALL, GOETHE COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING OF INTEREST IN SCHUBERT'S MUSIC FOR HIS POETRY, PREFERRING THE SETTINGS OF ZELTER, AND WE ALL KNOW WHOSE MUSIC TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST THROUGH THE TEST OF TIME. IF TOLKIEN FANDOM SHOULD EVER FEEL LIKE AN ALL-OUT EFFORT TO DISTRIBUTE THE BEST SETTINGS OF TOLKIEN POEMS, AN LP RECORDING SHOULD BE POSSIBLE FINANCIALLY. THERE ARE FIRMS THAT SPECIALIZE IN CUSTOM RECORDINGS IN SMALL EDITIONS FOR GROUPS THAT HAVE NO PARTICULAR INTEREST IN A PROFIT. HIGH SCHOOL BANDS AND CHURCH CHOIRS ARE THE SORT OF GROUPS THAT NORMALLY PATRONIZE THESE FIRMS, BUT THERE SHOULD BE NO PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION OF A TOLKIEN RECORD. THE ONLY ADVERTISEMENT AT HAND IS NOW TWO OR THREE YEARS OLD AND COSTS MAY HAVE RISEN SOMEWHAT SINCE THEN. BUT WFB PRODUCTIONS OF SCUDEBTON, PA. WAS OFFERING TO TURN OUT AS FEW AS 100 RECORDS AT $1.95 EACH, AND THE FIRM CHARGES ONLY 65¢ PER DISC FOR EACH ADDITIONAL RECORD. THERE WOULD BE LITTLE DANGER OF SERIOUS FINANCIAL LOSS IF 200 COPIES WERE ORDERED AT THOSE RATES, AND PUT ON SALE AT A WORLDCON FOR PERHAPS $2.50 APIECE; AS SOON AS HALF THE EDITION WAS SOLD, THE INVESTMENT WOULD BE ALMOST COMPLETELY RECOVERED. TWO PROBLEMS ARE INVOLVED IN SUCH A PROJECT. ONE IS THAT THESE DISCS ARE SUPPLIED IN EITHER PLAIN WHITE JACKETS OR IN JACKETS WITH STOCK PICTURES ON THE FRONT THAT WOULDN'T SUIT MIDDLE EARTH. THE FANNISH PRODUCERS WOULD NEED TO RUN OFF SOMETHING SUITABLE ON A GESTETNER USING EXTRA- OPAQUE PARE, THEN APPLY CEMENT LIBERALLY. THE OTHER DIFFICULTY IS THAT THESE FIRMS NATURALLY CAN'T DO THE ENGINEERING AT THOSE RATES. THEY PRESS ONTO RECORDS WHATEVER IS ON THE TAPE SUPPLIED TO THEM. SO IT WOULD TAKE CAREFUL CREATION OF THE TAPE TO PREVENT VARIATIONS IN VOLUME AND OTHER RECORDING CHARACTERISTICS FROM ONE ITEM TO ANOTHER. I DOUBT THAT THERE COULD BE ANY LEGAL REPERCUSSIONS AS LONG AS THE TOLKIEN PRODUCTION WASN'T [page 18] PROMOTED WIDELY THROUGH COMMERCIAL CHANNELS. IT IS CONCEIVABLE THAT A LARGE RECORDING FIRM ISSUING THE SWAHNN DISC NIGHT THREATEN INJUNCTIONS BASED ON THIS OR THAT TECHNIACALLY IF ANOTHER COMMERCIAL FIRM ISSUED A COMPETING DISC WITHOUT TOLKIEN'S BLESSING, EVEN THOUGH THE POETRY IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. BUT A LABOR OF LOVE WOULD PROBABLY BE IGNORED. /I THINK THAT IS AN EXCELLENT IDEA, HARRY. I COULD PROBABLY PUT TOGETHER SUCH A PROJECT MYSELF, IF THE TALENT INVOLVED WAS WILLING TO WORK WITH ME, WHICH IS MY MAIN DOUBT. IT COULD BE RECORDED ON A HOME TAPE RECORDER WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A QUALIFIED ENGINEER (I KNOW SEVERAL); I AM SURE I CAN LOCATE A PRESSING FIRM SUCH AS YOU DESCRIBE. I EVEN THINK THE MARGIN OF PROFIT WOULD ALLOW COVERS TO BE COMMERCIALLY PRINTED-- BUT AS I SAID, I COULDN'T DO IT UNLESS I COULD ASSEMBLE AT LEAST 2 OR 3 OF FANDOM'S BEST SONGSTERS-- MARION BRADLEY, TED JOHNSTONE, GEORGE HEAP ARE BUT A FEW OF THE MANY THAT COME TO MIND. I'M NOT GOING TO PUSH IT THO- @THOUGH@ IF IT'S MEANT TO HAPPEN, I GUESS IT WILL./
